Final Four The 2010 NCAA Final Four teams for the men were West Virginia against Duke, and Michigan State against Butler. Duke defeated West Virginia 78-57 and Butler defeated Michigan State 52-50. MSU had a great shot to be in the final and had a close loss. Finally it had come down to Duke and Butler playing for the championship. The game was long and close it came down to the final minute and Duke only won by 2 points with a final score of 61-59. The game was back to back scoring with the score close the whole time. Butler worked hard the whole year and not being in one of the big conferences made it all the way starting the tournament as a 5 seed. Duke started the tournament as a 1 seed. The final standings are Duke 35-5 and Butler 33-5. The 2010 NCAA Final Four teams for the woman were Stanford, Oklahoma, Connecticut, and Baylor. The games before the final were Connecticut up against Baylor and it was a blowout. Connecticut defeated Baylor 70-50 Baylor worked hard and came up short. Stanford played against Oklahoma and defeated Oklahoma 73-66 it was pretty close but still a 13 point loss. The final game the (championship) Connecticut playing against Stanford. Pretty much everyone knew UCONN would win back to back it was a no brainer. The game was really never close; it went Connecticut's way most of the game with the final score being 53-47. Connecticut had won and became undefeated for the second year in a row ! Both Stanford and Connecticut were 1 seeds. The final standings are Connecticut 39-0 and Stanford 36-2. This year's tournament was entertaining and long both the men and woman worked hard the whole time. Next years will probably be just as good! By: Josh Anzell |

Holocaust Memoriam " I have not lost faith in God. I have moments of anger and protest. Sometimes I've been closer to him for that reason ." - Elie Wiesel from his biography Night, which describes his experience as a concentration camp prisoner. The Holocaust was one of the most infamous events in world history. The Holocaust era was filled with fear and despair because of a dictator named Adolf Hitler (who died on April 30 th, 1945). Many survivors of the Holocaust are not around anymore, so we want to appreciate their bravery for surviving concentration and death camps. Notable survivors are author Eli Wiesel and pianist Nelly Ben-Or. A notable prisoner is Anne Frank, who is known for her diary that narrated her hiding in Amsterdam. The Holocaust was an example of ultimate racism and hate crime, and it has taught us to bring everyone together. Over ten million innocent people, including those who were Jewish, Slavs, and gypsies, died in the Holocaust. We want to remember them for being heroes that never gave up for survival. A good thing to do to show your remembrance is to visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C., or if you want a closer location, go to the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan. The Holocaust was a horrible mark on history, but by remembering those who died, we honor them for their bravery. By: Matthew Brown " Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart ." - Anne Frank |

Loss of the Titanic What do we think of when we think of the Titanic? Do we think of it as a ship or do we think of the loss of it. It doesn’t really matter how you think of it but you should always remember the ones who lost their lives on a ship that was thought to be invincible. It was built by the most experienced engineers at their time. The Titanic was the biggest passenger steamship built at their time. It was owned by the White Star Line, but it was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Northern Ireland. The ship set sail from Southampton, England and was heading towards New York on April 10, 1912. Four days after it set sail it hit an iceberg. The number of people that died was just shocking. There were 2,223 people aboard and 1,517 died. The people on the ship mostly died because of the lack of lifeboats. It only had a capacity of only 1,178 lifeboats. The ship then sank two hours forty minutes after it hit the iceberg. To this day the Titanic still lies below the ocean. It rests about 12,000 feet below the Atlantic Ocean. So if we could just take our time to remember the ones who died on board of the Titanic it would be really grateful for their families. By: Daoud Esa |

Red Out Assembly The Red Out Assembly was an assembly for Legg Middle Schools students and staff to show their Cardinal Pride. Students and staff bought a Cardinal Pride T-shirt for $5.00. And they were expected to wear it to the Red Out Assembly. Or a red shirt to show Cardinal Pride. I, myself, didn’t go. But I interviewed Taylor Longardner, and she told me all about what happened. Mr. Young shoved his face in pie to get a piece of bubble gum, and 6th, 7th, and 8th graders went against the staff to see who could scream “Cardinal Pride” the loudest. The 7th graders won the scream out. The 6th, 7th and 8th graders also went against the staff in a dress up competition, but the staff ended up cheating, they did not wear the dress up clothes right. They eventually had a scooter competition, the object was to see who could go to the end, around the cone, and back to the finish line. They all had fun and hopefully I will be able to attend the assembly this time, and have a great time. Like everyone else did! By: Cyra Lipman |

Earth Day Thank God men cannot fly, and lay waste the sky as well as the earth. ~Henry David Thoreau On April 22nd we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day! It is celebrated in 190 countries by over one billion people. The days following Earth Day, (24th-25th) hundreds of thousands of citizens are expected to perform large-scale celebrations to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day. I talked to some of the teachers at LMS and one of them said that—if the weather is nice—they’ll be demonstrating the effects that Global Warming and “greenhouse gasses” can have on the Earth. Although we do recycle on Earth Day, it’s about more than just recycling; it’s about saving out wonderful Planet Earth. It is a day to inspire appreciation and awareness about the environment. There are many different ways that regular students, like ourselves, can help save it. One suggestion is to not leave the lights on for too long, conserve the energy. Maybe you could switch to florescent light bulbs too, as they don’t use as much electricity. Another way to help the environment would be to plant a tree! Trees are renewable resources and we want them to be around for a long, long time. A time to plant them, besides the 22nd would be on Arbor Day, April 30th, which is basically the national ‘Plant a Tree’ day. Oh, and you know those innocent looking plastic rings that come with a six pack of pop or some other drink? Those can actually harm whales, fish, or a variety of other sea creatures. So be sure to see if they can be recycled or cut each ring before throwing it away. As you can see, just doing small things like the suggestions above can help save our Earth! So join in on April 22nd and help to save our Planet, because forty years after the first Earth Day, our environment/world is in more peril than ever.

Good Friday, Passover, Palm Sunday, Easter
Good Friday, also known as holy Friday, black Friday, great Friday, is a religious holiday observed primarily by Christians remembering the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. The estimated year of Good Friday is AD 33, by two different groups, and originally as AD 34 by Isaac Newton via the difference between the biblical and Julian calendars and the crescent of the moon. The Passover is one of the most widely observed Jewish holidays. The Hebrews where instructed to mark the doorposts of their homes with the blood of a spring lamb, when seeing this, the spirit of the lord passed over these homes, hence the term "Passover". Now the Palm Sunday, which is also called Passion Sunday or Lord's Passion, is Christian moveable feast that always falls on the Sunday before Easter. In many Christian churches, it is marked by the distribution of palm leaves (often tied into crosses) to assemble worshipers. Now Easter is the central religious feast in the Christian liturgical year. But some people think of it as the time of year to go around find eggs and eat candy all day, or some people would rather just spend time with there family and eat ham or duck. By: Logan Pfost |

Mathematics Awareness Month Did you know that math is used in sports, the environment, manufacturing, and a lot more? Well it is; math is used in sports when a baseball is hit, when a basket is shot, when a soccer ball is kicked, and playing golf. Researchers use math to try and understand the function of the brain, from the whole brain to the smallest part of the human brain. The health on Earth, recycling, global warming, pollution, and population growth all depends on math. In manufacturing math applies to rapid prototyping, bio manufacturing, computer simulation, and modeling. Some activities that you could do this month are looking at baseball cards and calculating the bating averages and ERA. You can also calculate the win and loss percentages for any team, and writing the roman numerals from past Super Bowls in standard forms. I hope you enjoy Mathematics Awareness Month, and have a great time learning new things this month. By: Brittnay Shaw |

National Child Abuse Prevention Month National child abuse prevention month is this April. There’s physical, mental, emotional, sexual, and verbal abuse. Physical abuse is getting hit, choked, paddled, whipped, and much more. Mental abuse is when people that you trust call you names and tell you things to put you down. When they say it so often you start believing it. Emotional abuse is when you get neglected and you don’t get taken care of. Sexual abuse is when someone of any age or gender is touching you in anyway and anywhere that you don’t feel comfortable or have given approval. Verbal abuse is when you’re getting hurtful things said to you or about you. There are many different ways to help prevent child abuse. There is being a friend to a child that you know and looking out for your neighbor’s children as well as your siblings or other family members. There are a lot of signs of child abuse a few are: The child shows sudden changes in school behavior or grades. Is always watchful, like they are preparing for something bad to happen Lacks adult supervision Is over compliant or over responsible Comes to school early stay at school late and doesn’t want to go home The parent and the child Rarely looks or touches each other They consider their relationship negative They actually say that they don’t like each other
In 1997, 1,054,000 reports of some form of child abuse were reported in U.S. In 2007 5.8 million children were involved in about 3.2 million child abuse reports. A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds. Almost every day at least five children die. Child abuse is a very big issue in the U.S. and we all need to try our best to help prevent child abuse this April. Please help the people who are hurt everyday by contacting www.childhelp.org/, www.darkness2light.org/gethelp/reporting.asp, www.childwelfare.gov/responding/how.cfm, and www.ag.ca.gov/childabuse/pdf/ss_8572.pdf. Remember, going to these sites is for reporting abuse or suspecting somebody else is getting abused. These sites aren’t jokes and this matter isn’t funny. This is our turn to help the people who need our help. Let’s help make this world a better place. By: Dana Bailey and Taylor Longardener |

Advice Column Student’s (being bullied) Question: There’s this eighth grade boy who keeps picking on me every single day. Every time he would see me in the halls, he would push me into the walls just to make his friends laugh. This student is about twice my size, so I really can’t do anything about it. He said that he’s going to fight me right after school, but I really don’t want to fight. I’m afraid I’d get suspended. This would really affect my school grades. Everyone thinks I’m scared of him. Dear editor, what actions do you think I should take to stay safe and out of trouble? Dear the bullied: First of all, I would like to say that I’m very sorry for the situation you’re in, and I would be very glad to help you overcome this situation. The first step is very simple. First of all, you would have to find a trusted adult that you can talk to. This step can be done very quickly because there are many teachers in your school. The best thing to do is to find your counselor. You may talk to any of your teachers about this problem, but it might be better to talk to your counselor instead. Counselors are the best people at helping you solve your problems. After that, explain everything that’s been going on to the trusted adult, counselor. Make sure you tell them everything in details so they could reach the conclusion faster. For your records, never think of fighting the bully. Fighting will cause you many problems you will not enjoy. This includes suspension and a lot of makeup work when you return. By talking to your counselor, you will save yourself a lot of trouble. It is always helpful to talk to a trusted adult before making the wrong decision. Always think deep before you make any decisions so you could stay safe. Thank you very much!!! By: Moe Aljabaly |

Classifieds Get them now: Yearbooks are still on sale. The yearbooks for 2009- 2010 are $25.00. You can pay in cash, or checks can be made out to Legg Middle School. If you are interested in purchasing a yearbook find Miss Hoorman before school or in the early afternoon. Lost and Found: There are tons of items in the lost and found. If you have lost something recently go to the office and look in the lost and found box. The items that are unclaimed go to Goodwill. So if you don't go find your lost items they will be gone forever. Watch what you wear: Students you need to remember the dress code. The weather is getting warmer, but you still need to dress school appropriate. Girls your shorts need to be at least 3 inches. Guys your pants/shorts need to be pulled up over your bottom, so your boxers don't show. Cardinal Pride: Remember to be respectful, responsible, and keep safe. Be sure to listen to your teachers, also make sure you are always on the right side of the hallway. Keep your cell phones turned off not on vibrate or silent. Keep your hands to yourself and respect others personal space. Poetry Contest: It is young people's poetry week. All you need to do it write a poem about animals and share it with the Branch District Library. The age groups are 5 -8 years old, 9-12 years old, and 13-15 years old. The winning poet of each age group will win tickets to the movie theater in Coldwater. In order to have your poets in the contest you need to drop your poems off at the library by April 30 th. Poems are a good way to get your feelings out, to relieve stress. There a lot of good poets in this school, so make sure you enter your poems into this contest. By: Alexys Wolfinger
